Residents of Viljoenskroon in Free State to March over Housing
Saturday 23 July 2005 by Dale
Residents of Viljoenskroen (a small town in the Free State) will gather from 9h30 on Friday15th July to march on the council offices to protest the housing crisis in their community and the performance of the council. More specifically, residents are angry over the unaffordable rental rates charged for council-owned housing, the politically-motivated allocation of RDP houses (whereby only ANC members are allocated houses), the politically-motivated hiring and firing of council workers (whereby non-ANC members of the community are victimised and/or sidelined) and the council’s recent decision to fire a whistle-blower who was exposing nepotism and corruption. The marchers will present a memorandum of their grievances at the council offices and have vowed to continue protesting until the council responds adequately.
